Grandma Calls Me Rabbit (2010)

Marguerite Benjamin Parker's debut venture into children's literature, Grandma Calls Me Rabbit explores the ever-present reach of the African diaspora into life of David, a curious seven year old. David wonders aloud why his paternal grandmother calls him "Rabbit" while his maternal grandmother calls him "Spider."

With the help of his mother, David discovers the special history and meanings behind his affectionate nicknames. Grandma Calls Me Rabbit is an excellent tool for introducing the African diaspora to young audiences. The book, intended for grades K-4, provides a glimpse into trickster tales and awakens the desire for further reading.

*This book is a conceptual work still in the production stage while an illustrator is sought to complete the project for publication. Readings at schools, libraries, and events upon request.

Philosophy

I personally believe that God has gifted every person with a unique set of qualities and abilities that we each are to use to make our way prosperous and leave a lasting impression in the earth. I credit God with the ability to transform a blank page into a story or begin with a few seemingly unrelated products and create a beautiful gift that makes someone's day. The gift of creation is indeed Divine and everyone, in some form, has a touch of divinity within. It is our responsibility while we reside on earth to discover, cultivate and use that spark of divinity in our lives to leave the world a better place than when we arrived. One's gifting and destiny can be in science, medicine, fine art, or even gift design. No matter the industry, we should love the work we do and use the work of our hands to benefit others. Inspiration is everywhere, but creativity/artistry is drawn from that God-given spark from within.  - Marguerite Benjamin Parker
